American Blue Pitbull Terrier
The history of the American Blue Pitbull Terrier is not as certain as other dog species, and tends to vary depending on which source you tend to trust over the other conflicting stories.
Some of the oldest stories say that the original version of these dogs goes all the way back to the time of the Romans when they used them to bait bulls.
This can not be fully confirmed, but as far as the modern story of these animals, there were two distinctive types of pitbulls in the 1700s.
One of these two types was the Blue poll of Scotland, which was referred to as a blue bulldog.
The blue bulldog was known for fighting well, but when bull baiting was banned, the lower classes had to find something else for their dogs.
This resulted in the sport of “ratting.” In ratting, several rats were placed in a pit with ablue bulldog, and in that pit the dog who could kill the most rats in a given time won.
This is where the “pit” in “pitbull terrier” came in. Eventually these dogs were known as American Blue Pitbull Terrier.
The terrier part of the name was added because they were good in hunting small vermin, something terriers were renowned for.
Even as these sports have fallen out of favor, the American Blue Pitbull Terrier still displays loyalty and can be very gentle with children as long as it is socialized with them early.
While these dogs have a reputation for viciousness, it really is not fair since they are often gentle as long as they are well-trained and treated well, and they make very loyal pets.
