American Staffordshire Terrier: The very sight of this pugnacious dog is terrifying for some people. Its history is it was originally crossed with game terrierīs and bulldogīs brought from England.
For the early pioneers in America, it was a faithful friend, as wellas a working dog. It was useful for general farm work, as well as a hunting dog. Itīs fearless nature meant that it was useful for hunting wild boar, and even bear's.
The american staffordshire terrier looks intimidating, it exudes an aura of great strength, despite the fact that it is a small dog, at least in stature. There is nothing small about the character of these magnificent dogs, it is king of itīs world; confining the tenacity of the original bull dogs, with the uniqueness of the terrier.
Besides being a ferocious hunter this dog is very intelligent, but it doen need training, as well as a certain amount of discipline. It does get on surisingly well with chidren, and it can be tolerant of other pets.
It was also developed in early America as a fighting dog, those jaws will not let go easily! In common with the game terriers it was bred from, it is not put off by size if itīs quarry. However the history of breeding as a fighting dog should not detract from the qualities of this very loyal and loveable dog.
In Europe it is now illegal to crop the ears of this dog, it is a look that makes the dog appear more intimidating. However it is purely cosmetic, and their is no need to have this done.
