Australian Terrier
The Australian Terrier is one of the few terriers that is not British.
At first this dog was used mainly for killing rats, snakes, and other small vermin, a necessity for many of the early Australian settlers, but it was also very friendly towards people and endeared itself to them as a family guard dog.
One of the most common comments regarding these small terriers, is that they believe that they are much larger than they actually are!
One of the many great attributes of the Australian is that it is equally suited to town or country living, thriving in both environments.
These dogs are renowned for their loyalty, intelligence, and even disposition. These dogs happily assumes the role of protector for home and household without barking or making a large fuss of it.
The exact origins of the Australian Terrier are not documented but it is thought that his beginnings were in Tasmania.
Some of the breeds thought to have played a role in its development are the Dandie Dinmont and Skye Terriers.
There is also a record of six Cairn Terriers being taken to Tasmania in the 1840's. Over time the species emerged to its present day form and has enjoyed the approval, friendship, and companionship of man ever since.
