Patterdale Terrier
The Patterdale Terrier was developed in England as a type of working terrier. Specifically, this type of dog was originally bred for the purpose of working small ground varmints.
There are a number of different types of terrier dogs, so if you are considering the selection of a terrier as a new pet, it’s a good idea to understand more about one of the most popular terrier varieties, the Patterdale.
The fact that the goal of a breeding program was to produce an animal that was capable of squeezing through tight spots meant that the result was a dog with a small frame and large amounts of energy.
It is interesting to note that while scars on other types of dogs might penalize or even disqualify a dog in theshow arena, scars on a Patterdale are actually considered to be honorable if the scars were gained while working prey and are therefore not to be penalized or considered as grounds for disqualification.
The relatively few factors that will disqualify a Patterdale at show include extreme aggressiveness or shyness as well as albinism.
Patterdale dogs are available in a wide variety of colors including black and red as well as mixed colors such as black and tan.
Usually, most Patterdale will be solid black; however. While these dogs have a small, compact build they can actually weigh up to about 17 pounds. At the maximum, a Patterdale Terrier should not be any taller than 15 inches.
